Will Schmitt

Principal - Executive Advisory

Will is a Sydney-based Australian-American global innovation expert, international business adviser, Board Director and innovation academic. He has spent twenty years working at the intersection of government, industry, and capital — helping design the investment frameworks, ecosystems, and policy environments that drive innovation-led growth. He advises governments, companies and organisations on where to direct innovation investment, how to build the conditions that attract and deploy capital effectively, and how to govern complex innovation programs over time.

His career has spanned senior roles in global economic development, national innovation policy, ecosystem leadership and academia. Most recently, Will served as a Senior Executive at Investment NSW, where he led the development of the NSW Innovation Blueprint 2035 — a whole-of-government framework for aligning public investment behind innovation-led growth. Prior to that, he was a Partner and Managing Director with FoodShot Global (APAC), an Australian non-profit catalysing investment in food and agricultural innovation across the Asia Pacific.

Earlier in his career, Will held senior advisory positions at the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and The World Bank, leading innovation programs in more than a dozen countries across Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. He was a founding co-lead of LAUNCH — an award-winning global accelerator partnership between NASA, Nike, and USAID — which attracted more than USD $100 million in external investment for its portfolio innovators.

Will has advised on fund design, mission-oriented investment frameworks, open innovation strategy and process, precinct and ecosystem design, international innovation partnerships, and commercialisation strategy. He has taught and designed curriculum in entrepreneurship, innovation, and global development at Georgetown University and Swinburne Business School and is currently an Agrifood Innovation Fellow at the Australian National University (ANU) Agrifood Innovation Institute (AFII).
